A full phone can make it difficult to install updates or save a video. Start by finding which category is taking space, then remove copies you can identify. Storage is the space used by files and apps; it is different from the memory apps use while running.

## Find the largest category

Open **Settings → Storage** and select a category. Google's [storage guide](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7431795) describes this view and notes that some steps depend on the Android version. Your phone's menu may use different names.

If photos take most of the space, start there. If apps or downloads dominate, focus on those instead. Check the available space again after each change so you know whether it helped.

## Review downloads and large files

Open your phone's file manager, or Files by Google, and look through Downloads, videos and duplicate suggestions. Sort by size if that option is available. Old installers, received videos and exported archives can be large, but a large file may also be the only copy of something important.

Open uncertain files before deleting them. Move files you want to keep to a computer, external storage or a cloud account, then check the destination copy. Empty the file manager's trash only after confirming you no longer need its contents. Trash behavior differs between apps, so check the prompt before confirming.

## Remove local copies of backed-up photos

Google Photos has a **Free up space on this device** option. Before using it, confirm that the desired photos and videos have finished backing up to the correct Google account and that you can view them from another device. The feature removes local copies; those photos will need a connection to view from the cloud unless downloaded again. Google's [photo cleanup instructions](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128843) explain the conditions.

Do not confuse this feature with deleting a photo from the library. Read the confirmation carefully, particularly if the phone contains images you need while offline.

## Check apps and offline downloads

Remove apps you no longer use after checking for data stored only inside them. A game save, recording or draft may need a separate export. For apps you want to keep, inspect their own settings for downloaded films, maps, podcasts or music and remove only the items you can download again.

Clearing an app's cache may recover temporary space, but **clear storage** or **clear data** can reset the app and remove local information. Read the option before tapping it. Google's [Files guide](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9713869) notes that clearing its suggested junk files permanently deletes those files.

Return to **Settings → Storage** to check the result. If space is still tight, repeat the review with the next-largest category rather than deleting unfamiliar folders. Remember that cloud storage and phone storage are separate: deleting a local copy can free phone space without increasing your cloud quota.
